Washington commanders Running Back Austin Ekeler Suffers Achilles Tear
landover, MD – Washington Commanders running back Austin Ekeler sustained a complete Achilles tendon tear during SundayS game against the Arizona Cardinals, a source confirmed to ESPN. The injury occurred with 5:50 remaining in the game when Ekeler went down without contact adn required assistance off the field. He was later carted to the locker room and exited wearing a walking boot and using crutches.
The loss of Ekeler is a significant blow to the Commanders’ offense. Acquired in the offseason, Ekeler quickly became a key contributor, serving as the primary back and excelling on third downs and in spread packages.Last season, he totaled 733 yards from scrimmage, rushing for 367 yards and adding 366 receiving yards. Beyond his production,Coach Dan Quinn repeatedly highlighted Ekeler’s leadership within the running backs room and throughout the offense.
Ekeler expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support following the injury, writing on Instagram Saturday, “I appreciate all the wishes.I appreciate you all.”
The Commanders now turn to a running back group consisting of rookie Jacory Croskey-merritt, veteran Jeremy McNichols, and third-year player Chris Rodriguez Jr.,who had a strong training camp and preseason despite being inactive for the first two games. Washington recently traded veteran Brian Robinson Jr. to the San Francisco 49ers last month in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick.
Ekeler joined the Commanders after spending his first seven seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers,initially signing as an undrafted free agent.The severity of the Achilles tear will require surgery and is expected to sideline him for the remainder of the 2024 season.
