Cologne’s Lord Mayor Henriette Reker pointed out the dangerous situation of the homeless in parts of Germany just before the heavy onset of winter expected.
“We are facing a few days with partly severe frost. It can be life-threatening for homeless Cologne residents,” wrote the non-party town hall chief of the metropolis on Saturday evening on Twitter.
Lowest temperatures down to minus 9 degrees
In Cologne nobody has to sleep on the street. “Everyone affected has the opportunity to spend the night in an emergency shelter.” Reker appealed to passers-by who notice homeless people outside to inform the city. (The winter help telephone can be reached on 0221/474 555 45. In acute danger, it is advisable to dial 112 directly.)
The German Weather Service expects frosty nights with lows even in the Rhineland to minus 9 degrees at the beginning of the week.
