Cologne: Network failure largely paralyzes the university

Cologne –

On Thursday, a far-reaching network disruption paralyzed many systems at the University of Cologne – including the e-mail and telephone systems were probably affected.

As the university’s computer center announced, the error was found during the day. “The connections to our systems will probably only be able to be restored tomorrow,” it said.

The university’s website was also unavailable on Thursday.

The disruption was so far-reaching that the data center assured in the late evening that the failure “would not result in any disadvantages in terms of submission deadlines or exams”. Rector Axel Freimuth and Vice-Rector Beatrix Busse had confirmed this to the data center. “We hope this is reassuring news …” one of several tweets from the data center said.

Among other things, data storage devices that can be accessed via the Internet are affected by the failure. Students can use the systems to create drafts for master’s theses, for example.

At least one student complained on Twitter that he was threatening not to meet his deadline. He should inform the examination office, so the tip, but only “if our phones and emails work again”. (mdo)
