Collection trips canceled: Deutsche Post sinks into flood of parcels

In the corona crisis, online orders in Germany have to be waited much longer. The amount of packages is similar to that for Christmas. Deutsche Post sees the blame for the fiasco at the dealers.

The Deutsche Post is creating the flood of parcels of the online trade, which is booming in the Corona crisis. Special pick-up trips to dealers have been reduced nationwide, said a spokesman for the Bonn group. The Post subsidiary DHL records shipments as in the period before Christmas.

More than eight million parcels are currently being transported every day. Otherwise, the annual average would be around 5.2 million parcels per working day. “We are continuously working to synchronize our capacity with demand,” said the spokesman.

The Bundesverband Onlinehandel complained that various retailers were “extremely irritated because parcel logistics companies such as DHL canceled the additional pick-up trips from the retailer without replacement”. If the parcel service providers had pointed out the bottleneck in good time, the retailers could have throttled sales, said BVOH President Oliver Prothmann: “The packed parcels are now at the retailer and will not be delivered.” This delays delivery to consumers.
