A cold case team from the Rotterdam police reopens the investigation into the death of thirteen-year-old Sedar Soares, the Rotterdam police report Monday. Soares was shot on 1 February 2003 when he and his friends threw snowballs from the parking deck at Slinge metro station.
Gerald H. was arrested in April 2004. H. was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the court in Rotterdam in 2005, but was acquitted by the court and the Supreme Court for lack of evidence. Witnesses unexpectedly withdrew their statement during the appeal.
There is no immediate reason to reopen the case. As far as is known, the police are not yet on the trail of a suspect. “The Soares case never let us go,” says a police spokesman. “It really appeals to everyone’s imagination in Rotterdam.” For that reason, the police want to review the case with the current investigation techniques. “Hopefully it will now lead to the arrest of a suspect.
The case was previously included in a cold-case calendar, which is distributed in prisons and TBS institutions. The calendar is distributed there, because detainees often know more about offenses committed. As far as we know, a case has never been solved this way.
