The coalition agrees to raise the salaries of university teachers this year

Riga, August 17, LETA. The parties forming the government have agreed to increase the salaries of university teachers as of September 1 of this year, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (JV) opened on Monday after a meeting with the coalition partners’ media.

“We have agreed that tomorrow [otrdien] “a decision will be made at the government meeting to increase the salaries of university teachers from September this year,” said the politician.

The leader of the new conservative party, the Minister of Justice Jānis Bordāns, added that funds have been found to increase the salaries of teachers for universities under the Ministry of Education and Science, as well as the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture.

Atis Zakatistovs, the leader of the party “KPV LV”, added that funds have been found for this year only.

Bordāns pointed out that an agreement had been reached on additional necessary funds for teachers’ salaries in the coming years as well, considering this issue in the budget review process.

However, Kariņš emphasized that no decisions have been made on the 2021 budget yet, and on August 18, the government will decide on funding for this year. The issue of the source of funding is important in the context of salary increases in the coming years. One of them is considered to be more efficient use of existing funds.

The Ministry of Education and Science (MES) has previously expressed its readiness to find the necessary funding for 2020 in the amount of 383,777 euros to increase the salaries of higher education teachers, ensuring it from the budget allocated by the MES.

The Latvian Trade Union of Educators and Researchers was preparing to protest, demanding an increase in the salaries of university teachers.
