Coach threw out because of referee

Sporting Braga’s coach stepped down due to referee errors.

Unusual coach decision in Portugal: Custodio Castro gave up his position as coach of first division club Sporting Braga on Wednesday because he was fed up with the many mistakes of the referees and the disadvantages of his team, said club president Antonio Salvador. The many mistakes are “neither acceptable nor excusable,” said Salvador in a club message.

The club boss spoke among other things of “falsification of results and tables” and of an “attack” on football. Braga lost 3-4 on Tuesday night at Rio Ave. The decisive goal came from a controversial penalty in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

“I’m very disappointed,” said the 37-year-old Castro after the final whistle. The former international of Portugal had only taken over as manager in March after moving from Ruben Amorim to Sporting Lisbon. Braga is currently fourth with 50 points.
