Michael Liniger Returns to EV Zug with Focus on Development and Championship Pursuit

zug, Switzerland – Michael Liniger has officially resumed his role as head coach of the EV Zug hockey team, bringing a reputation for demanding standards and a commitment to player development. His return follows a period of reflection and planning, with a clear objective: to secure championship titles while nurturing the next generation of swiss hockey talent.

A History of Demanding leadership

Liniger’s coaching style is well-known within Swiss hockey circles. current assistant coach, Sandro Genoni, emphasizes Liniger’s consistency: “He doesn’t change. He is very demanding, detailed and brings momentum to the team.” This approach, while effective, hasn’t always been without friction, especially given Liniger’s own playing career.

Genoni acknowledges a past rivalry, recalling their encounters in championship finals. “I stood twice in the final against Davos with Kloten. They just had a great goalie, so I never became a master,” Liniger reflects with a smile, referencing his inability to secure a Swiss National League championship as a player. Despite this, the two now collaborate effectively within the EV Zug organization.

Zug’s Championship Ambitions and Youth Development

EV Zug has explicitly stated its ambition to contend for championships and cultivate young players. The club’s mission statement prioritizes both winning titles and fostering the development of emerging talent. The Zug Canton, with a population of approximately 128,000, has become a significant hub for Swiss hockey, and the EV Zug plays a central role in that.

Though, Liniger is tempering expectations ahead of the upcoming season. “You have to see reality. The league is difficult to win. It takes a lot of willingness, work, focus and cohesion to have a chance to get so far,” he stated. The Swiss National League, comprised of 12 teams including SC Bern, Genève-Servette HC, and ZSC Lions, is known for its competitive balance and physical play.

Liniger’s previous coaching experience includes a successful tenure with the GCK Lions (formerly known as the Zurich Lions), where he implemented a similar beliefs of rigorous preparation and player development. He will be looking to replicate that success in Zug, building upon the existing foundation of established players like Leonardo Genoni (goaltender) and Nico Hischier (forward, currently playing in the NHL with the New Jersey Devils, but a product of the Zug system).
