There is unrest in Berlin’s natural idyll. Horses, dogs, picnic blankets – and endless space and tranquility. These are the sewage fields in the southwest of Berlin, located in Berlin-Gatow.
But there have been notes hanging there for daysthat “the Senate” clears many, many trees. Many readers sent photos of the posters (“Der Kahlschlag”) to the Tagesspiegel newsletter for Berlin-Spandauwho reported on it in the last two issues.
The Senate Department for the Environment Regine Günther, Greens, but said no last week on the phone of the Spandau newsletter: “We are not clearing anything – that has been a district matter for 25 years.” Responsible in Spandau City Hall is Environment Councilor Andreas Otti, AfD. He already knew the notes from Gatow – and had to let that sink overnight.
“Where did the person who posted these notes come fromwho has their information is not known. You are definitely completely wrong, ”his office finally wrote in the Spandau newsletter from Tagesspiegel. “Until February 28th, only hedge cutting measures were carried out. Since the hedge had not been tended for a long time (lack of money), it could now finally be cut, with trees being removed as well as larger defective areas being replanted at a later point in time. “
But: “We have neither completely cleared the area, still intended by the city property as the current owner. ”The character of the landscape is wanted to be preserved. “It is in the nature of things that cutting measures may be necessary for this,” said the authority, but: “These are currently neither small nor large.”

The “Gatow Working Group” also gets involved. The “Gatow Working Group” around Andreas Erben has been fighting for the preservation of the sewage fields for 40 years. The association calms the excited minds: “A well-structured wood can accommodate a lot more species than, for example, the southern part of the wood, where only Norway maples of the same age and then much too close together are monotonous,” it says in a letter to the neighbors – here the link. But: Not only the working group would like more information in advance from the town hall. But press work costs time, personnel and money. Only fake news and anonymous dice slips are cheap.

The district will buy the natural idyll in 2021. It feels like the sewage fields are as big as BER, there is wind and space like on Sylt and horses and cows like on the farm. Size: 180 hectares.
Until 1994, Berlin wastewater seeped into the sewage fields, In 2010 the last drop trickled here. Berlin’s sewage fields will in future be used as “compensation areas”. This is reported by the SPD leadership from the town hall. Here you can read more in the Spandau newsletter from Tagesspiegel.
