Hemaseal & Cide: A Glutaraldehyde-Free Desensitizer Revolutionizing Dentistry

For decades, dentists have sought effective solutions to combat postoperative sensitivity and enhance bond strength in restorative procedures. One such innovation, Hemaseal & Cide®, emerged from the vision of Joseph Pelerin, DDS, who sought a desensitizer that was both effective and gentle on soft tissues.

Did you know? Postoperative sensitivity, while affecting a small percentage of patients, can substantially impact their comfort and satisfaction.

Dr. Pelerin’s journey began with a quest for a glutaraldehyde-free, chlorhexidine-based formula. This led to the development of Hemaseal & Cide®, now a flagship product of Advantage Dental Inc. For 24 years,it has been recognized for its desensitizing properties, ability to improve bond strength, reduce microleakage, and demonstrate potent antimicrobial activity.

The Genesis of an Idea

The inspiration for Hemaseal & Cide® stemmed from Dr. Pelerin’s desire for a more effective desensitizing agent. attending an Academy of Operative Dentistry meeting, he learned about the benefits of chlorhexidine in periodontal treatment from a National Institutes of health representative.

He described the mechanism of action of the molecule in a mouth rinse. I knew that one of the main reasons for postoperative sensitivity in posterior composite restorations was a micro-void in the bond, and I thought that in eliminating those voids, we could avoid using glutaraldehyde and rather use chlorhexidine, which does not irritate the soft tissue. I am very mechanical, and I was using chlorhexidine as a mechanical building block. I also found that chlorhexidine can lower the surface tension of water, and I thought that this could really be the ultimate liquid to eliminate postoperative sensitivity and provide other benefits without the negative effects of glutaraldehyde. If glutaraldehyde were a new substance being submitted for FDA clearance today, I do not believe that it would be cleared.

Dr. Pelerin’s insight into the potential of chlorhexidine to reduce surface tension and eliminate micro-voids proved pivotal in the development of Hemaseal & Cide®.

clinical Impact and Efficacy

before Hemaseal & Cide®, approximately 3% of Dr. Pelerin’s patients experienced postoperative sensitivity. However, with the introduction of the new product, that number plummeted to 0%.

I thought, ‘Wow, either I am really lucky this month, or this really works,’
Joseph Pelerin, DDS

The positive results quickly gained traction as other dentists began incorporating Hemaseal & Cide® into their practices.

Scientifically proven Benefits

Numerous studies have validated the antimicrobial capabilities of Hemaseal & Cide®. One study demonstrated that it was twice as effective as a leading glutaraldehyde-based product in combating Staphylococcus bacteria.Additionally, research has shown that it enhances bond strength and minimizes microleakage.

Pro Tip: Hemaseal & Cide® can be used in conjunction with self-etch products to further reduce postoperative sensitivity and enhance overall restorative outcomes.

These findings underscore the notable advantages of using Hemaseal & Cide® in operative dentistry.

A Call to Action

The evidence supporting the use of Hemaseal & Cide® is compelling. Its ability to reduce postoperative sensitivity, improve bond strength, and provide antimicrobial benefits makes it an invaluable tool for dental professionals.

Dentistry is tough enough; we do not need needless obstacles making our lives miserable.

by incorporating Hemaseal & Cide® into their practices, dentists can enhance patient comfort and improve the long-term success of their restorative treatments.
