Classic guitarist and lutenist Julian Bream dead

The classical guitarist and lutenist Julian Bream is dead. The Briton died yesterday at the age of 87, as his management announced. He died peacefully in his home, the agency said on the James Brown website. Bream lived in the county of Wiltshire, west of London, according to the BBC.

Bream was considered a child prodigy on the guitar and lute in the post-war years. He had taught himself to play the lute using an instrument his father had bought from a seaman in London, as the BBC wrote. He is credited with bringing the almost forgotten instrument back into the public eye.

The guitar was by no means an established concert instrument at the time. The BBC quoted him as saying that he turned to the guitar because no one else had done it. Bream has received the Grammy Award four times for his recordings. Between 1960 and 1985, he was nominated 20 times for it.
