(11.01.2022) The Frankfurt parents are constant in their preferences for classic first names: Marie and Maximilian, who have topped the hit list of first names for children in the Main metropolis for several years, are again the front runners this year. Among the girls, Marie took first place with 182 mentions and Sophie came second with 155 mentions.

As in the previous year, Maximilian defended the top spot among the boys with 134 mentions. The city councilor Stephanie Wüst, who has been responsible for the registry office since September 9, 2021, announced the first name statistics on Monday, January 10.

“In 2021, classic first names were again very popular in Frankfurt,” says Wüst. Popular first names from recent years can also be found in the other places: Among the girls, Maria is again in third place with 138 mentions, ahead of Emilia, who takes fourth place with 111 mentions. Among the boys, Noah took second and third place with 120 mentions and Alexander with 108 mentions.

This statistical evaluation is automated. There is no distinction between whether the names were given as first, second or third names. If one assumes that the first first name is also the first name when choosing baby names, the result is different when ranking the most popular first names in Frankfurt am Main. Mia is on pole position with 77 mentions, followed by Emilia with 75 mentions in second place and Lina with 71 mentions in third place. In the boys’ category, Noah with 96 mentions, Leon with 85 mentions and David with 71 mentions.

There is no noticeable trend in Frankfurt to give children more and more first names. 56 percent of parents gave their baby a single first name in 2021; 39 percent chose two first names for their newborn baby. Only five percent of parents opted for three or more first names. “That is a distribution that corresponds to the figures for the past few years,” says Wüst.
