NATO soldiers in Kosovo were deployed on Monday to keep demonstrating Serbs at bay at three town halls that have Kosovo Albanian mayors.

The Serbs boycotted the local elections in April, but still do not accept that Kosovo Albanians should rule in cities where there is a Serbian majority.

NATO strongly condemns the attack against the peacekeeping force, it says statement from the defense alliance.

– Such attacks are completely unacceptable. The violence must stop immediately. We ask all parties to engage in dialogue and avoid actions that could make the situation more inflamed, says a spokesperson for Nato.

Several soldiers from the Italian and Hungarian KFOR contingent suffered traumatic wounds with fractures and burns due to the explosion of fire equipment.

– The unprovoked attacks on NATO units are unacceptable and KFOR will continue to fulfill its mandate impartially, says KFOR chief Angelo Michele Ristuccia.

There is constant unrest in the northern districts, where many ethnic Serbs have never accepted that Kosovo broke away from Serbia and became independent in 2008. The vast majority of Kosovo’s 1.8 million inhabitants are ethnic Albanians.
