Clashes in Central Maluku, Residents Ready to Make Peace on Conditions

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Residents of Ori Village, Haruku Island, Maluku Tengah agreed to make peace with the residents of Kariuw Village, but on one condition: boundary first settled.

This was conveyed by residents after the Maluku Police Chief, Inspector General Lotharia Latif and Danrem 151/Binaiya, Brigadier General Arnold Ritiauw met residents of clashes in Pelauw Village, Haruku Island, Central Maluku Regency, Wednesday (26/1) night.

The meeting involving community leaders, religious leaders, traditional and youth leaders from Pelauw and Ori residents, Central Maluku Regent, Haruku sub-district head, Ambon Police Chief and Dandim, Brimob Dansat, Karo Ops, and Head of Public Relations took place at the home of the King of Pelauw State on Wednesday night.

“Last night, the Kapolda with the Danrem, and several Korem and Polda officials arrived on Haruku Island. Currently, a meeting with community leaders from Pelauw and Ori villages is taking place. The meeting was held to find a solution,” said Head of Public Relations of the Maluku Police, Kombes Pol M. Rum Ohoirat through an official statement, Thursday, (27/1).

Ohoirat said the people of Pelauw and Ori agreed they wanted peace. However, they made a note so that the source of the problems that had often occurred related to land boundaries could be resolved first.

“So that there is certainty, either through the customary court or through the general court session, that is the hope of the community,” said Ohoirat.

Rum added that the community also hopes that the police will build permanent security posts at every village border.

“The community also hopes that the National Police will immediately place a permanent post on the village border, both between Kariuw and Ori, as well as Kariuw and Pelauw,” he added.

The Maluku Regional Police Chief, said Ohoirat, agreed to the residents’ request to determine the issue of land boundaries legally.

“Regarding the request for a permanent post, the Kapolda has already considered it,” he added.

Kapolda and Danrem appealed to the public to remain calm and maintain a conducive situation.

“Hopefully this problem can also be resolved as soon as possible,” he said.

The arrival of the Maluku Police Chief in Haruku, he continued, was aimed at seeing the post-conflict situation and conditions but as a form of state presence to provide a sense of security and protection to the community.

The Kapolresta and Dandim are also planning to meet the community in Kariuw village for a dialogue to find solutions.

“The plan is that tomorrow the Pangdam and Danlantamal will also arrive to meet the people here to jointly find a solution,” he said.

Previously, clashes broke out at the border of Kariuw Village and Ori Village, Haruku Island District, Central Maluku Regency, Maluku Province, Wednesday (26/1).

In the clashes between residents of neighboring villages, a number of houses in Kariuw caught fire. In addition, there were victims who died in the clashes between the villages.
