Civil Union for homosexuals: Vatican clarifies Pope’s position

“Homosexuals must be able to benefit from legal protection through a civil union”, Pope Francis said in a documentary presented on October 21 in Rome. However, after a few days of silence, and many reactions, the Vatican Secretariat of State wanted to clarify the situation. The highest Vatican authority insists, in an internal note to its ambassadors around the world, that the Pope had not spoken out in favor of same-sex marriage and that he “Had not changed the doctrine of the Catholic Church”, in the matter.

Pope Francis “Referred to certain state provisions, certainly not to the doctrine of the Church, often reaffirmed over the years”, insisted the Secretary of State.

Concern in traditionalist circles

“Homosexuals have the right to be part of a family. They are children of God and they have the right to a family. No one should be left out or made miserable for this reason ”, can we hear say, in spanish, the pope in Francesco, a film by director Evgeny Afineevsky. The words of the sovereign pontiff, resulting from a montage of unpublished extracts from an interview granted in 2019 to a Mexican television, raised concern, in particular in traditionalist Catholic circles.

The conservative German cardinal Gerhard Müller, ex-guardian of dogma at the Vatican, retired by the Pope in 2017 – thus claimed to have received hundreds of calls from the faithful “Disturbed”. The day after the documentary’s release, the latter told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera that legal recognition of a gay civil union was “Prohibited for Catholics” because it constituted “A first step” towards same-sex marriage.

“Inconsistency”

In its clarification, the Vatican indicates that the editing of the documentary, which does not include precisely the questions that had been asked to the Pope, could “Cause confusion”. He was speaking on a law in force for 10 years in Argentina in favor of same-sex marriage. The Pope would also have indicated: “It is an inconsistency to speak of same-sex marriage.”

The idea of this note addressed to the ambassadors is at the initiative of Pope Francis “To clarify its position and answer the questions of the faithful”, the Vatican has indicated, indicating that Francis does not wish to respond directly to the media.
