What’s so special? There is hardly anything that can beat the view of the city from the top of Rockefeller Center. Except maybe being able to enjoy this view with a drink in hand. The “SixtyFive” bar on the 65th floor of the iconic building is part of the tower-owned restaurant with the promising name “Rainbow Room”. Originally opened in 1934 as a nightclub for New York better society. After a general overhaul a few years ago, there is not much left of the old glamor. Today a modern lighting system, a huge crystal chandelier and prisms in the windows create an atmosphere that lives up to the name. That has its price. For the upcoming Easter brunch, the “Rainbow Room” calls for $ 162 per person – probably for those who have already found the gold treasure at the end of the rainbow. Visitors can get away much cheaper in the adjoining bar. A cocktail there costs around $ 20. That’s good rooftop bar style in Manhattan. And a real bargain compared to the almost $ 40 that are due to visit the official “Top of the Rock” viewing platform.
What do you have in view? All of Manhattan. Bronx and Central Park to the north, Empire State Building and Lower Manhattan to the south. There is also the view over the East River towards Brooklyn and the Hudson River to Jersey City.
Who is still there? A colorful mix of socially up-and-coming people, selfie aficionados and people who are seriously in love – the outdoor terrace is, after all, made for marriage proposals. Even if the restaurant and bar are not exactly an insider tip, the number of tourists is limited.
What is tarnishing the prospect? It is not just the prices that serve as a selection criterion – the dress code issued is also intended to appeal to a rather elitist audience. A jacket is compulsory, sneakers are taboo.
