The badminton tournament in Mülheim an der Ruhr has been canceled.

The spread of the new virus represents an incalculable risk for visitors and athletes for the city of Mülheim, which banned the tournament. “After medical advice and a deliberation process, we canceled the event at the scheduled time,” said Mülheim’s sports and health department head Marc Buchholz the “difficult” decision in the afternoon.

The badminton tournament of the BWF Word Tour, endowed with $ 170,000 (around 156,000 euros) and with numerous Asian participants, was to take place from March 3rd to 8th. Around 250 international players and up to 7000 visitors from all over the world were expected. “Due to the current situation, the Mülheim health department has recommended that the event be canceled and postponed to a later date,” Buchholz continued.

On Tuesday it became known that a man from the Heinsberg district on the Dutch border fell ill with the Sars-CoV-2 virus. He is currently being treated in the University Clinic in Düsseldorf.
