City of Joondalup councillor Nige Jones has apologised after attempting to claim reimbursement from ratepayers for a beer purchased at the Crazy Horse Revue strip club in Adelaide. Jones stated he visited the venue seeking a late-night drink before an early flight and remained for approximately 20 minutes. The incident, which occurred around 11:30pm, came to light after Jones submitted an expense claim including the purchase. While the amount was not disclosed, the attempt to charge the cost to the City of Joondalup has sparked public criticism and prompted an apology from the councillor. this raises questions about appropriate use of public funds and ethical conduct for elected officials. Jones is now facing scrutiny over his judgment and the potential ramifications for his position.
Jones explained he believed it was a “mistake” and left instantly, possessing “documentation to prove that I was in the next pub not shortly after.” He admitted to feeling embarrassed by the situation, stating, “At the time, I just thought it was a mistake and I left.”
“It was like, you know, it was 20 minutes max in there,” Jones said. “You know, if I was a pervo, I would have stayed in longer.”
He expressed regret for submitting the receipt, saying, “If he had his time again, he wouldn’t have put the bloody receipt in.” jones maintained his innocence, adding, ”I did it in kind of innocence, because I didn’t think I was up to no good. I was just looking for a late beer.”
jones also noted his unfamiliarity with Adelaide, explaining, “I was in an area that I’m not familiar with, you know, I’m not familiar with Adelaide at all.” The City of Joondalup has not yet commented on whether it will pursue recovery of the funds or take further action.
