The city of Mechelen is making three tablets available to the Milsenhof residential care center, where a corona outbreak was diagnosed at the end of last week. 41 people were infected, of which 33 residents. All visits were therefore canceled, but in order not to lose contact with the outside world, the city council provides a digital solution.

The corona virus quickly spread at the end of last week in the Milsenhof residential care center in the center of Mechelen. 33 residents and eight staff were infected. Most people had few or no complaints, but two residents did experience symptoms. To prevent further spread, the infected residents found shelter in a secluded wing and all visits were canceled until further notice.

To prevent the residents from losing all contact with the outside world, the city makes three tablets available. They were handed over on Tuesday. “In the first place, we have supported the Milsenhof in various areas in recent days,” says Mayor Alexander Vandersmissen (Vld-Groen-m +). “But ensuring that residents maintain social contact is equally important. That is why we are making the tablets available, just as we did during the first wave at the residential care centers of Zorgbedrijf Rivierenland. ”

All residents, including those who tested negative, must remain in their rooms since the outbreak. That is very difficult for many of them. For example, singer Jo Leemans (93) spoke of a situation that reminded her of the beginning of the Second World War.

“These have been particularly intense days for everyone at Milsenhof,” says director Danny Coremans. “But we must not lose sight of the mental well-being of the residents. We really appreciate this gesture from the city. It is not the same as ‘real’ contact, but in this way the residents can still keep in touch with friends and family. ”
