(CNN) – Things got pretty difficult near Lake Hollingsworth in Lakeland, Florida, this week.
After residents began reporting snake sightings to the Lakeland Parks and Recreation Department, this agency and the city’s Public Works Department began investigating.
It turns out that it is the mating season of the Florida water snake, authorities said, and a large group of snakes has gathered near the lake for a giant orgy. Caution tape was placed around the area to raise public awareness about the snake orgy.
“It seems they have congregated to mate,” the department said in a publication From Facebook. “They are not poisonous and generally not aggressive as long as people don’t bother them.”
Once the mating season is over, the department said that snakes should go their separate ways.
“They are an important part of the ecosystem and should not be disturbed,” the department said, adding that these love meetings occur annually.

Florida water snakes are native species whose habitats include aquatic environments. In general, they find themselves resting on tree branches over water or sunbathing on the coast, the department said.
