City begins with the first easing

New York. After around three months of restrictions due to the corona pandemic, the first easing will be allowed in the metropolis of New York from Monday. In the first of four two-week relaxation phases, operations can then start up again on construction sites and non-system-relevant shops can sell their goods, for example, from the front door. In the fourth phase, cultural institutions, among other things, may then reopen.

The metropolis was the last of ten regions in the state of New York to meet all seven conditions for the start of the relaxation phases – for example, sufficient free hospital beds and sufficient tests. Hygiene and distance rules continue to apply. If the numbers worsen, the process can be stopped or rolled back at any time.

In the state of New York with around 19 million inhabitants, almost 400,000 people were infected with the coronavirus, more than 30,000 of whom died after being infected. Around two thirds of these come from the densely populated metropolis of New York, where around half of the state’s residents live – it became the epicenter of the pandemic in the USA. Recently, there had been fewer and fewer new infections, and the number of deaths per day fell from around 800 just a few weeks ago to less than 50, as Governor Andrew Cuomo announced.
