Cirque du Soleil (known from “Alegria”) asks for protection against creditors

The corona crisis threatens to make a big victim: Cirque du Soleil applies for protection against its creditors. Due to the pandemic, the world famous circus can no longer give spectacle performances. The 44 performances that were spread all over the world were stopped.

As a result, no money comes in to the Canadian company behind the circus. Two months ago, the largest circus company in the world was forced to fire almost all of its employees, nearly 4,700 employees. Just over 250 staff continued to work behind the scenes.

So now Cirque du Soleil demands protection against creditors. This is often a prelude to bankruptcy. In the press release, company management holds out hope for the company that has gained worldwide fame in 36 years, especially through the 1994 show Alegria (see video below). They see the protection request as a necessary step to reschedule their company’s debts.
