DUBAI, KOMPAS.TV – Dubai police have arrested a group of people on charges of public depravity following a widely circulated video showing naked women posing on a balcony in the city.
In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), violations of public decency laws, including naked acts and other indecent behavior, carry up to 6 months in prison and a fine of 5,000 dirhams (or nearly IDR 20 million). The distribution of pornographic material is also punishable by imprisonment and large fines under state law based on Islamic or Sharia law.
On Saturday night (3/4/2021), a number of videos and photos showing about a dozen naked women lined up on a balcony in the upscale Marina area in broad daylight, spread on social media.
National daily The National said the stunt appeared to be a public one, without elaborating. While The Sun said the 15 models in the nude photoshoot were taking part in a public action for an Israeli website.
The wide circulation of these photos and videos clearly shocked the country, which consists of 7 federations of Arab kingdoms. The reason is, in Dubai, even more benign behavior such as kissing in public or drinking alcohol without permission, has put people in jail. Dubai police said they had arrested several people in connection with the “indecent” video and filed them for public prosecution.
