In impeachment proceedings against the US President Donald Trump wants his defense team to dismantle the charges of the Democrats in full. The two charges against Trump – abuse of power and interference with the House investigation – violated the constitution, the president’s defense team said on Saturday.

Trump’s lawyers see no crime

The charges included neither crimes nor violations of the law, let alone “serious crimes or offenses” – reasons which the constitution cites as reasons for so-called impeachment. They were also “the product of an invalid procedure” that denied the President any right.

The impeachment process initiated by the Democrats is an “illegal attempt to reverse the results of the 2016 election and interfere in the 2020 election,” it said. The charges against the Democrats are “a dangerous attack on the right of the American people to choose their president freely”.

Trump is said to have influenced Selenskiy

The Democrats accuse Trump of urging Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj to investigate his political rival Joe Biden to influence the 2020 U.S. presidential election in his favor. They see it as proven that Trump has made a meeting with Selenskyj in the White House and the release of military aid for Ukraine dependent on the announcement of such investigations.

Trump is the third president in US history to face impeachment in the Senate. Formally, it started on Thursday, and the content should start on Tuesday. (Mt / dpa)
