Cipule: We are currently in the fourth, in fact worst case scenario

She found that the number of outbreaks of Covid-19 in social care centers has increased, while several outbreaks have been detected in psychoneurological hospitals in recent days.

Cipule emphasized that this would increase the workload of hospitals. “Unfortunately, there are also a number of outbreaks in psychoneurological hospitals in recent days, which may also increase the number of patients in hospitals, and this is also a problem in their basic diagnosis related to psychiatric illness,” Cipule explained.

Among other things, she found that 15% of the calls last day were related to the hospitalization of Covid-19 patients. The fourth, in fact worst case scenario has already been reached, said the director of the NMPD.

The total occupancy of Covid-19 beds is 73% with the number of beds expanded, however, this amount has been achieved both in the previous and this week with the opening of an additional 100 beds.

The load is higher in Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital and Riga East Clinical University Hospital, where the occupancy of Covid-19 beds is more than 80%.

The occupancy of the intensive care unit beds is also high – in the Eastern Hospital – 85%, in the Liepāja Hospital, Vidzeme Regional Hospital and Rēzekne Hospital it has reached 100%.

“Any future patient is actually currently at risk of not finding their bed,” said the director of the NMPD.

Cipule also revealed that the number of Covid-19 patients in the North Kurzeme hospital affects the provision of other emergency services.

It has already been reported that 584 new cases of Covid-19 were detected in Latvia on Monday, while 16 cases died, according to data compiled by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC).

This is the largest number of Covid-19 patients dying in Latvia in one day. To date, a total of 288 people who have been diagnosed with Covid-19 have died.

During the last day, 9764 Covid-19 tests were performed in Latvia, of which 6% were positive. The SPCC has previously explained that this figure is considered important in the European Union, as above 4%, the spread of the disease is considered to be rapid and uncontrolled.

In Latvia, a total of 22,104 people have contracted Covid-19. The calculations of the agency LETA show that in the last 14 days 8411 people have contracted Covid-19 in Latvia, while the remaining patients are classified as recovered by SPKC.

Data from the National Health Service show that 143 Covid-19 patients were hospitalized last day and 75 were discharged from hospitals. This is the largest number of Covid-19 patients hospitalized per day to date.

Thus, a total of 709 patients are currently being treated in hospitals, of whom 667 have a moderate course of the disease and 42 have a severe course of the disease. This is the largest number of Covid-19 patients in hospitals to date.

According to health officials, at the beginning of December, about 800 beds for Covid-19 patients had been vacated in Latvian hospitals, but the biggest problem is to provide medical staff to care for the sick.
