Cinema revenues in Mexico recover in 2022 despite competition from streaming

December 6, 2022 | 5:00 in the morning.

A few weeks after the end of one of the busiest years since the fight against the pandemic, Movie industry maintains a strong recovery, with revenues almost 90% higher than those recorded in 2021 and despite the shadow of streaming platforms, with which it converges in the offer of films.

The National Chamber of the Film Industry (Canacine) recorded preliminary box office receipts from January 1 to November 30 of 10,853 million pesos.

While the figure is below pre-pandemic levels, it represents an 89% increase over income received in the same period last year.

S expectations for 2022 were cautious, but the picture now looks very differentmainly due to the marked trend of recovery, coupled with the fact that all indicators show good symptoms, said Avelino Rodríguez, director of Canacine.

Previews have been accommodative due to a change in rescheduling as a result of the pandemic, albeit with very large titles that either went unscheduled or were released directly to streaming platforms.

the film producer also pointed out in an interview with the CEO.

The the decline in theater attendance has not only impacted international films, but Mexican cinema as wellalthough it is expected that in the future it will return to the pace it had before the COVID-19 emergency.

More tickets sold, more previews

Canacine expects to end the year with 165 million tickets soldwhich would mean an 85% increase from the 89 million sold in 2021.

For industry, December is considered to be one of the best times for the public to go to the cinemaand this in particular is scheduled for the premiere of the sequel to one of the highest-grossing films of all time on Thursday the 15th: ‘Avatar: Path of Water’.

The film, according to specialists and the president of Canacine himself, as well as being eagerly awaited, “will be a resounding success in theaters all over the world”.

And 2023 looks promising with Previews like ‘Shazam! Wrath of the Gods’, ‘John Wick 4’, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ and ‘Super Mario Bros’.

According to Rodríguez, these films will bring “more people to theaters and give a hint that studios are already betting again on this starting platform,” he said.

Streaming, more rival than ally

When asked about the role currently played by streaming platforms in front of the cinemaGiven that during the pandemic they have been an outlet for several premieres since they could not be held in theaters, Rodríguez assures that “There’s definitely a rivalry”.

No one knows how to do it, everyone is evaluating options for premieres, in theaters or on platforms, which occur in a commercial universe that is just starting to make itself known.

Rodriguez added.

However, he highlighted that as commercial dynamics change, it is becoming clear that for both production buyers and theater placers, streaming platforms such as Netflix, Disney or Amazon “have very aggressive commercial schemes”.

This scenario, therefore, has some implications for the industry. For instance, s manufacturing companies are currently working on gross margins below inflation.

While on the exhibitors’ side, there are contracts that do not allow films to be released because they are subject to platformswhich in both cases is “very worrying”, according to the president of Canacine.

For example, Rodríguez presented the case of the Mexican film ‘Mal de ojo’, which was encouraged to be released in theaters this year, which was good because “they gave it enough numbers to be able to get a higher rating with the platforms,” he said.

However, he specified it there is still a lot of speculation about it, as the viewership is uncertainwhich makes it more difficult than before to ‘calculate’ and creates opportunism, because you buy at times like this or in a panic they are obvious, he said.
