The new generation of BMW M3 and M4 has generated a lot of controversy, clearly polarizing the opinion of the public, who expressed themselves particularly on the whimsy of the huge front grids. Chris Harris wanted to share his opinion on the matter.
Harris is a great connoisseur of automotive history and the automotive industry in general, as well as the owner of many BMWs with the M brand as a fan of the sports division of the German car manufacturer. In the video above he begins by exposing his thoughts on previous generations of M3 and M4: he appreciated them very much, and hopes the new models will not disappoint in their fundamental characteristics.
A special mention went to the upcoming M3 Touring (here is the first teaser) that Harris, like so many fans, awaits with great anxiety. The presenter said he was in favor of cars with such shapes, and therefore finds the sporty “familiars” interesting.
Coming to the heart of the matter, namely the design, Harris actually poses himself in a rather neutral way, although he doesn’t like too large grids. The Top Gear host believes that over the next few months the audience will begin to get used to it and even to appreciate these forms. However, he initially admitted to beings found dazed by the first frontal images:“When you see it for the first time you think ‘what the hell have they done?’, but you can guess the logic of the choice. “ He later tried to explain the motivation to himself like this:“It seems the Chinese really like huge and ugly grills.”
But what many do not take into consideration is the aftermarket. Those who spend the high amount required by a BMW M4 can typically also afford some light customization, and the wide grilles almost make it easy.
