CHR Verviers: a Belgian 1st in the treatment of headaches!

The CHR Verviers Verviers East Belgium is at the Belgian forefront of the treatment of headaches, these famous headaches of various origins, thanks to the first non-invasive neuromodulation unit in Belgium. Specialists have recently been using high-tech equipment for both emergency and long-term treatment of these headaches which cripple the lives of patients. Report within this multidisciplinary unit which is unique in our country.

The CHR Verviers is thus strengthening its management of headache patients through its Multidisciplinary Headache Treatment Center.

The CMTCD of CHR Verviers is the first multidisciplinary headache treatment center in Belgium. Our patients benefit from the latest therapeutic advances (medicinal or not) and from the expertise of a renowned neurologist surrounded by a specialized team (15 doctors from various specialties dealing with pain, 4 nurses including a “headache nurse” and 13 paramedics specially trained in algology). The establishment of the very first non-invasive Neuromodulation Unit allows the CHR Verviers to offer a cutting-edge non-drug alternative to patients suffering from primary headaches. In the future, this alternative may be extended to other painful symptoms (post-Covid headaches, neuralgia, phantom pain, etc.).

Neuromodulation can be summarized as regulating the activity of the nervous system (central, peripheral), using electric / magnetic technologies, perfectly mastered, for therapeutic purposes as an alternative / complement to drugs. The Neuromodulation Unit of CHR Verviers offers the use of state-of-the-art devices allowing treatment in consultation or at home. The techniques used are perfectly safe, for the most part combine use in preventive treatment or crisis treatment, do not involve any risk of overdose and have an effectiveness comparable to many drug treatments (with which they can be combined). After a brief training, the patient directly becomes a major player in his treatment.

The Unit therefore offers:

Treatment with tDCS: preventive technology that modulates the activity of the cerebral cortex in specific and medically selected regions, with a view to obtaining a reduction in headaches or even their disappearance. Completely painless and almost imperceptible, this technique gives excellent results with the patients for whom it is prescribed.

Treatment with n-VNS: portable stimulation of the vagus nerve applied to the neck by the patient. The vagus nerve plays a central role in the regulation of pain and its stimulation would also have an anti-inflammatory effect. This treatment is particularly effective for cluster headache and migraine attacks. The cervical n-VNS is an exclusivity currently held by the CHR Verviers for Western Europe.

Treatment with e-TNS: treatment by external stimulation of the trigeminal nerve (nerve carrying pain in headaches) designed to modify the sensation of pain transmitted by the nerve to the brain. E-TNS also has a preventive effect and desensitizes the trigeminal nerve.

REN treatment: treatment by stimulation of a region of the arm making it possible to inhibit the headache located upstream by physiological mechanisms. Treatment of crisis par excellence, it significantly reduces the migraine attack or puts an end to it.

Through its Multidisciplinary Headache Treatment Center and the Non-invasive Neuromodulation Unit, the CHR Verviers is innovating and strengthening its catalog of medical services, thus adapting even better to the evolving needs of its patients.
