Chinese officials mocked by netizens because there are many Chinese restaurants in Taiwan

Beijing

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs China was made fun of by netizens for his online comments. The mockery relates to comments via Twitter in which the senior Chinese official used the number of Chinese restaurants in Taipei to assert Beijing’s claim to Taiwan.

As reported AFPMonday (8/8/2022), the comment that triggered the ridicule of netizens was conveyed by Hua Chunying as a spokeswoman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday (7/8) midnight local time.

“Baidu map shows that there are 38 Shandong dumpling restaurants and 67 Shanxi noodle restaurants in Taipei,” Hua wrote in a Twitter comment.

“The taste is not deceiving. #Taiwan has always been a part of China. A long lost child will eventually return home,” he added.

Hua’s tweet came amid tensions in the Taiwan Strait, as China was angered by the visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.

The Chinese government responded to the visit by holding large-scale military exercises involving the launch of ballistic missiles and canceling a series of talks and cooperation agreements with the United States.

Hua’s tweet backfired, with thousands of Twitter users — which is banned in China and can only be accessed using a special VPN — insinuating Hua’s logic of thinking about the Chinese restaurant in Taiwan.

“There are over 100 ramen restaurants in Taipei, so Taiwan is definitely a part of Japan,” wrote a Twitter user with the profile name Marco Chu in response to Hua’s tweet.
