Health officials in the city of Lanzhou said 3,245 people had contracted Brucellosis, a disease that usually arises from close contact with animals or animal products infected with Brucella. Local health authorities said initially 1,401 people had tested positive for the disease. However, health authorities say there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission so far.
Chinese authorities found the biopharmaceutical plant had used an expired disinfectant in the production of a Brucella vaccine for animals between July and August last year. This means that the bacteria are not killed in the “exhaust” of the factory.
Contaminated gas from the China Animal Husbandry Lanzhou Biopharmaceutical Factory in Lanzhou forms aerosol-containing bacteria, and is then carried by the wind to the Lanzhou Veterinary Research Institute, infecting nearly 200 people there in December last year.
According to news agency reports Xinhua, Saturday (19/9/2020), more than 20 students and faculty members of Lanzhou University, some of whom have been to the institute, tested positive as well.

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), person-to-person transmission of Brucellosis is extremely rare, but some symptoms may recur or never go away.
These symptoms include recurring fever, chronic fatigue, and swelling of the heart or arthritis.
Lanzhou authorities said the factory, which apologized earlier this year, had been revoked of its license to produce the Brucellosis vaccine. Compensation for patients will start gradually from October.
