China Hosts Landmark SCO Summit, Signaling a Shift in Global Power Dynamics

Tianjin, China The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit commenced today in Tianjin, with a clear message aimed at reshaping the international order. Leaders from over 20 nations, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, are participating in the two-day event, which observers say is a deliberate display of influence challenging Western dominance.

A key development at the summit was the apparent easing of tensions between China and India, with both nations pledging to move past recent border disputes. Putin’s arrival was marked with a formal welcome, and Beijing signaled its intent to strengthen ties with Armenia.

President Xi Jinping, during a welcome banquet, emphasized the SCO’s growing role in “safeguarding regional peace and stability.” He stated the association – representing over 40% of the world’s population – is poised to “play an even more important role” in fostering unity, cooperation, and progress for the Global South, ultimately contributing to “advances in human civilization.”

This year’s summit, described by Chinese state news agency Xinhua as the “greatest in the history of the group,” is taking place against a backdrop of global instability. The US-China trade war, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and escalating nuclear tensions with Iran all contribute to a complex geopolitical landscape.

“This encounter proposes a multilateral order modulated by China and diffrent from those dominated by Westerners,” explains Dylan Loh, a professor at the Nanyang Technological university in Singapore. He adds that the widespread participation demonstrates “the growing influence of Beijing and the attraction exerted by the SCO for non-Western countries.”

The summit also provides a platform for strengthening ties between China and Russia, particularly in light of the war in Ukraine. While maintaining a stance of “neutrality,” Beijing has continued to purchase Russian oil and gas and reportedly supply dual-use materials, fueling accusations of supporting the Kremlin. Monday’s meeting between Xi and Putin is expected to further solidify this relationship and reiterate calls for “a fair multipolar world order.”
