Beijing, Jun 6 (Prensa Latina) The National Health Commission of China reported today that in 2019 the number of professionals certified to work in traditional medicine (TCM), considered one of the country’s ancient treasures, increased to 767 thousand.

According to that authority, 625 thousand are doctors and the rest are pharmacists specialized in this form of healing.

Last year, another 5,771 MTC centers were installed, totaling 65,809 with nearly 1.33 million hospital beds for those seeking these treatments.

Since the country’s founding as a republic in 1949, the Chinese government has supported the development of MTC and complemented its application with Western procedures in order to strengthen the population’s health security and at the same time reverse skepticism about its effectiveness.

For example, a 2016 law contemplated the opening of specialized clinics in general hospitals and maternal and child care centers financed with public funds, and ordered the proper qualification of practitioners.

It proposes the use of technology, a special protection for formulas considered state secrets and medicinal resources, which implies the cultivation without toxic pesticides of rare and endangered species, and the supervision of raw materials.

This is everything with the inclusion of the MTC as an essential component of the plan to improve the health of the Chinese people by 2030.

But experts insist on adjusting the sector’s procedures to international standards, in order to broaden promotion in foreign markets.

Other voices call for strengthening education and public campaigns within China on utility and value, especially in the younger generations.

In this context, some political consultants suggest including the subject in the primary and secondary school curriculum, and building a national museum on MTC.
