China Releases One-Year Mars Explorer Route

China’s National Space Agency (CNSA) released the route piloted by the Zhurong Mars rover on Friday, July 23, 2021, which has been operating for a year after launch from Tianwen-1, China’s first Mars probe.

Zhurong had advanced 585 meters. The map shows that since starting exploration, the Mars rover has moved south from its landing position. During the process, the onboard camera captures images of the landscape and topography along the route. The equipment at Zhurong also aids in the analysis and research of rocks and dunes that are considered valuable.

The CNSA also released a number of pictures taken by Zhurong, showing the sandbars caused by aeolian processes. The rover has been operating on the red planet for 68 Martian days, which is 69 Earth days.

Tianwen-1, consisting of an orbiter, lander and rover, is launched from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site on the coast of the southern Chinese island province of Hainan, on July 23, 2020.
