China will forbid the production, sale and use of disposable plastic bags in urban areas this year. In 2022 the ban must apply to the whole of China. The use of plastic straws is also out of the question this year. The Chinese authorities announced this on Sunday.
Markets where fresh products are sold will have until 2025 to find alternatives. Plastic packaging, cutlery, toothbrushes and combs are also prohibited. With these measures, China wants to reduce the use of plastic in the hotel and catering industry by 30 percent.
China is the largest producer of plastic products in the world and faces many environmental problems due to the use of plastic. Almost 1.5 million kilos of plastic soup floats in the Yangtze River.
