China launched its new Fengyun-3E weather forecast satellite into space on Monday.

According to the Xinhua news agency, the satellite is equipped with 11 remote sensing payloads which are expected to improve the accuracy of weather forecasts.

The satellite was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert, northwest China.

China’s National Space Administration (CNSA) said a meteorological satellite designed with an eight-year lifespan would gain measurements of atmospheric temperature, humidity and other meteorological parameters for numerical prediction applications that could increase China’s weather forecasting capacity.

With the use of this new satellite, China’s space authorities can monitor and report on global snow and ice coverage, sea surface temperatures, natural and ecological disasters to better respond to climate change and prevent and mitigate meteorological disasters.

“The satellite will monitor the solar and space environment and their effects, as well as ionospheric data to meet the needs of space weather forecasting and support services,” CNSA added.

Meanwhile, three Chinese astronauts have completed all the tasks for their first extravehicular activity in space on Sunday.

China sent astronauts into space on the Shenzhou-12 spacecraft on June 17.

According to China’s Manned Space Agency, two of the three astronauts had exited the Tianhe core module on the Chinese space station on Sunday.

They attached leg braces and an extravehicular work platform to the mechanical arm for about seven hours.
