The Suga and Biden meeting took place at a time when US-China relations continued to stretch, especially regarding the issue of Taiwan and the South China Sea.

Recently, Biden sent a delegation to Taipei as a signal of US support for democracy in Taiwan. This move angered China because so far it views Taiwan as a territory of dissent who wants to become independent.

China has even threatened to take military action if Taiwan continues to try to approach the US for recognition of independence.

Meanwhile, regarding the South China Sea, China and the US have competed with each other to hold military exercises in the region in recent times.
