China Expels US Warship Sailing in the South China Sea

Military China repel a warship United States of America (US) which was found sailing into waters near the Paracel Islands at South China Sea. This is the latest example of tension in the waters that many of these countries dispute.

As reported Reuters, Thursday (20/1/2022), the Chinese military’s Southern Fleet Command or People’s Liberation Army reported that the US warship identified as USS Benfold had ‘illegally’ sailed into Chinese territorial waters without permission and blatantly violated China’s sovereignty.

“We earnestly demand that the US side immediately stop such provocations, otherwise they will suffer serious consequences from unforeseen events,” the Chinese military’s Southern Fleet Command said in a statement.

In a separate statement, the US Navy said the USS Benfold “agreeds the rights of navigation and freedom in the vicinity of the Paracel Islands, consistent with international law”.

“At the conclusion of operations, the USS Benfold exited its over-claimed and ongoing operations in the South China Sea,” said Mark Langford, a spokesman for the US military’s 7th Fleet.

The US has repeatedly carried out what it calls freedom of navigation missions in the South China Sea to challenge China’s territorial claims.
