Childcare has enough capacity for emergency shelter during lockdown | NOW

The childcare has sufficient capacity to receive vulnerable children and children of parents with crucial professions, says the branch association Social Childcare (BMK) on Saturday about the emergency care for children during the lockdown.

The occupancy is on average less than 50 percent of what it normally is, according to a BMK poll among a large number of childcare organizations. More parents do call on childcare than during the first lockdown.

According to the research, many parents were afraid of infection risks last time. It is also said that childcare has learned from the first lockdown and was therefore better prepared and could offer more clarity in the communication with parents.

Chairman Monique Vreeburg says the industry is “very aware” of the social role it fulfills. According to BMK, previous research showed that the first lockdown had many negative consequences for vulnerable children.

The trade association feels it has a responsibility to offer safety to these children in particular. That is why childcare organizations actively approach the parents of these children and visit them at home to make them aware of the emergency shelter.

Also more children in emergency shelters in schools

In addition to childcare organizations, educational institutions also provide emergency care for vulnerable children and children of parents with crucial professions. Earlier this week, after classes resumed after the Christmas holidays, it became clear that more children were involved than during the first school closure.

The General Association of School Leaders (AVS) therefore calls for children to be brought to school only when absolutely necessary. Due to the large number of pupils, teachers need more time for emergency shelter, which is at the expense of distance education.
