The numbers of chikungunya infections have already reached 1,200 cases, according to reports from Coronel Oviedo, where the Regional Hospital is overwhelmed with patients with symptoms of the disease that also affects several professionals in white.

Dr. Liz Ramírez, director of the V Sanitary Region, explained that people need to be made aware to eliminate breeding sites, since they point out that lack of cleanliness is the main cause of mosquito infestation.

He explained that 80% of the cases registered in the department of Caaguazú occur in the city of Coronel Oviedo.

He explained that the Regional Hospital receives patients from all parts of the department and the number of professionals with rest due to the disease is high.

“Reducing the number of cases is in the hands of the citizenry, it is everyone’s responsibility, since as long as there are mosquito breeding sites there will be more cases,” he said.
