CHICAGO, Ill. – Chicago State men’s soccer displayed determined play Sunday, scoring once against Mercyhurst before falling 4-1 at Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep. the Cougars‘ second-half goal,coupled with sustained offensive pressure,signaled continued progress for the program as it navigates a challenging early season schedule.
Despite the setback, Chicago State’s performance underscored a growing resilience within the team, demonstrating an ability to compete against strong opposition. The Cougars are building toward a competitive Western athletic Conference (WAC) schedule, and each contest provides valuable experience for a roster featuring both veteran leadership and emerging talent.
Arafath Ouro-Gnao scored his second goal of the season in the 54th minute, finishing a play initiated by an assist from Zephyn Brockert-Kress. Chicago State registered 11 total shots, with six directed on goal, showcasing consistent attacking intent. Ouro-Gnao led the Cougars’ offensive effort with four shots, while Hilary Odhiambo and Karma Bhagentsang also created scoring opportunities.
Goalkeepers Aiden Hollander and johan Rodriguez Morales combined for four saves, working to limit Mercyhurst’s scoring chances. The Cougars also earned a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks, generating late-game opportunities in their attempt to close the gap.
