Chewing Gum Could Detect Flu at Events Like Oktoberfest, Researchers Say
WÜRZBURG, Germany – Scientists at the University of Würzburg are developing a diagnostic chewing gum capable of detecting influenza, possibly offering a new method for early detection at large gatherings like the annual Oktoberfest. The innovative technology integrates sensors into chewing gum or lollipop form, aiming for mass-market usability within approximately four years.
The project, supported by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space Travel as part of the “Influ Kau” project, seeks to revolutionize influenza detection. Currently, early identification relies on traditional prevention methods, but researchers envision a future where a simple chew could help prevent outbreaks at major events – including the notorious “Oktoberfest flu” that impacts attendees in Munich each year. Project manager Lorenz Meinel explains, “This strategy opens up new opportunities for the worldwide early detection and fight against influenza.”
Researchers are collaborating with the start-up Flareon Biotech GmbH to refine the sensor integration and prepare the diagnostic system for large-scale production. The university stated the progress process is expected to take around four years to complete.
