Harianjogja.com, JAKARTA– Chest pain is often associated with a heart attack. In fact, chest pain can be caused by several factors. However, in most cases this chest pain is not caused by a heart problem. Compiled from the UK NHS and Docdoc, here are five possible causes of chest pain:

  1. Indigestion
If your chest hurts right after eating or when you feel full, then digestive upset is probably the cause. This condition can occur when stomach acid rises into the esophagus. If your chest pain is caused by this factor, it will usually be accompanied by nausea.
  2. Chest sprains or strains
A dislocated or tense chest can be the cause of your chest pain. This condition can occur when your chest is injured or after doing sports. Chest pain after this exercise can subside when you rest.
  3. Airbag Infection (Pneumonia)
If your chest pain gets worse when you inhale and exhale, it could be an infection in the air sacs or pneumonia. Chest pain caused by this factor will also get worse when you are in an area of high temperature. Symptoms of this infection will usually be accompanied by a cough with phlegm with yellow or green mucus.
  4. Infection in the Nerve Area (Herpes Zoster)
If caused by this infection, your chest pain will be accompanied by tingling and the appearance of a rash on the skin that will become blisters. Infection that occurs due to the varicella zoster virus will cause pain in the affected area. Shingles most often occurs in people aged 50 years and over.
  5. Anxiety Disorders
The cause of the latter feeling of chest pain is motivated by psychological factors. When you are emotionally unstable, such as anxious or in a bad situation, chest pain can occur. Chest pain caused by this factor will be accompanied by an accelerating heart rate, sweating, and dizziness.

That’s the possible reason why the chest hurts. You should consult a doctor to get a proper diagnosis and treatment. Especially if the chest pain you experience already feels like it has spread to other parts of your body.
