Oslo – World chess champion Magnus Carlsen deliberately gave up a game with a Chinese opponent during one of his online tournaments. He considered it a fair gesture, because the third player in the world ranking, Ting Li-women, paid for a bad internet connection in the previous game.

Were it not for the outage, their initial semi-final match would have ended in a draw, but thanks to the Chinese technical problems, Carlsen won. In the second game, therefore, he took an unusual step, when in the third move he let himself be deprived of the queen and then gave up after the fourth move. “I respect Ting as a player and as a person, so I considered it the only right solution,” said the 29-year-old Nor. He finally won the semi-final match with Ting Li-female 2.5: 1.5.

In online chess tournaments, it is quite often the case that they are affected by internet connection outages. The best Czech chess player David Navara also has a bad experience with this, because of that he lost his chance to triumph at the open championship of the Czech Republic in online blitz chess in April. In addition, the quality of connections in China often fluctuates due to its exceptional security, which allows the Chinese authorities to restrict, control and censor foreign websites.

At the time of the coronavirus restrictions, Carlsen has prepared a series of online tournaments that will culminate in the August finals. The current one, called Chessable Masters, will end on Sunday 5 July.
