Chemetall’s langelsheim Plant Powers Up with 100% Renewable Energy
Langelsheim, Germany – Chemetall, the surface treatment global business unit of Basf’s Coatings division, has announced a major step forward in its sustainability efforts. The company’s Langelsheim production facility, its third largest globally, is now operating entirely on renewable electricity sourced from Basf Renewable Energy.
This transition is projected to reduce approximately 620 tons of indirect carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually, marking a significant stride toward Chemetall’s 2025 sustainability targets.
Global Push for Renewable Energy
The Langelsheim facility joins a growing list of Chemetall sites embracing renewable energy. This includes:
- Boksburg, South Africa: State-of-the-art photovoltaic systems
- Cayirova, Türkiye: Photovoltaic systems
- Querétaro, Mexico: Photovoltaic systems
- Blackman township, Jackson County, USA: 100% renewable electricity
Chemetall sources approximately 2,000 MWh per year through Virtual Power Purchase Agreements (vPPAs) with Basf Renewable Energy. this energy is generated from a mix of solar and wind resources.

With approximately 230 employees, the Langelsheim site is Chemetall’s largest production facility in the Europe, Middle East, Africa, and South america (EMEASA) region. It plays a crucial role in manufacturing Chemetall’s aerospace solutions, including Naftoseal aircraft sealants, which are approved by leading aircraft manufacturers and maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) companies worldwide.
In addition to aircraft sealants, the facility produces corrosion protection agents, cleaning products, and other innovative solutions for metal surface treatment.
