Chelsea have confirmed the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino through official channels. The 51-year-old coach previously reached an oral agreement with the Blues and now the transition is finally completed. Pochettino has been out of work since last summer after being fired from Paris Saint-Germain. The Argentine has signed at Stamford Bridge until mid-2025, with the option for another season.

With the arrival of Pochettino, Chelsea’s search for a successor to Graham Potter comes to an end. Thomas Tuchel was fired at the beginning of September and succeeded by the Englishman, but he was anything but convincing the Blues. Potter, who came over from Brighton & Hove Albion, only managed to win twelve times in 31 games and had to leave the field at the beginning of April. Club legend Frank Lampard was appointed as an interim pope to finish the season.

Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique, among others, were associated with the vacancy at Stamford Bridge, but it is now clear that Pochettino will be in charge at Chelsea next season. The manager started his coaching career at Espanyol in Spain, after which he switched to Southampton after more than four years. Pochettino was only a year and a half and sixty games at the helm the Saints before leaving for Tottenham Hotspur. There, despite a relatively small budget, he made an impression and made it to the Champions League final with his team in 2018/19, which was eventually lost to Liverpool (0-2).

It is now up to Pochettino to also impress Chelsea, who have had a season to forget. The Londoners finished in twelfth place in the Premier League due to Sunday’s draw against Newcastle United (1-1), meaning that they will not play European football next season. Chelsea spent no less than 610 million euros on sixteen new players under the new owner Todd Boehly this season. It is expected that Pochettino will use this transfer summer to narrow his selection.
