– On January 23, 2020, the Chinese government will block the entire population of Wuhan, with a population of 14 million. Wuhan, which turned into a’ghost city’, became the starting point of a huge pandemic. Then, it was branded as’the source of the virus’ from all over the world.

As if Koreans were pushed away ‘Exodus‘Went on. After the blockade of Wuhan, he returned to his homeland on three temporary charter flights. Park Seung-cheol (30), who graduated from college and got a job here, also got on the second flight. At that time, he said, “I will never come back here” and said that he was upset. ‘Second hometown’, which gave a similar feeling to Daegu, where the main family is located, has gone so far.

Exactly a year later, the situation turned out to be the opposite. The statistics of confirmed cases in Wuhan, which was called’the forbidden land’, point to zero. A photo of the inside of the club filled with’No Mask’ young people was captured by foreign media. Citizens gathered at the New Year’s Eve event from December 31st to January 1st shared their hopes by blowing colorful balloons.

– On May 1 of last year, Park Seung-cheol returned to Wuhan on a charter flight. And I work for a local electronics company. When the situation in Wuhan turned to stability, it is said that not a few people returned like Park.

However, many foreign students who gave up returning to school due to the burden of quarantine for more than 40 days, and Koreans who were unable to return due to invitation letters. He consistently uploads videos taken all over the city on social media to inform them’this is the current Wuhan’.

Mr. Park, who has been in Wuhan for eight years, was curious about Wuhan and the corona he had experienced. The JoongAng Ilbo conducted an interview through social media chat and video phone calls on the 21st and 22nd.

When the Corona 19 epidemic began, it must have been very scary.

At first, I was really scared. Some people died from corona in the vicinity. I couldn’t go back to Korea, and even if I did, I wondered if I could come back (to Wuhan). I was scared of getting infected, but it seems like a memory after passing.

How do you compare before and after the corona epidemic and now?

In May of last year, the floating population recovered to some extent. People who did not wear masks were sometimes seen on the street, but shopping malls and other places asked for QR codes and masks to be worn. When I wander around the streets these weekends, there are a lot of people going around the same level as before Corona. I think more than 90% of them have not recovered. However, it seems that the number of people without masks has increased.

Are there any more confirmed cases?

I know there are few. Recently, a person from outside traveled to Wuhan to thoroughly inspect the local residents, and I heard that there was no problem.

I think the wounds in people’s hearts will still be.

When I asked a friend from a nearby university, especially the grandfathers and grandmothers I lived with died suddenly, and when I think about it, there are many people who are still in sadness.

I heard that I also hurt my heart.

When I was in Wuhan, the corona broke out here, and when I went to Daegu, there were many confirmed cases. I came to think,’I have a lot of patients every time I move.’ Because of that situation, self-esteem was lowered and turned negatively, leaving a trauma. Now I have recovered from the trauma.

Living in Wuhan has some regrets.

Wuhan is considered as’the place where there are many (corona) patients, the first place of origin’, so there are many negative stories. It is the same a year ago or now. Before the corona broke out, it was introduced on famous TV shows and started to be known little by little in Korea, but it’s a pity.

Finally, I asked Park Seung-cheol what kind of time was the last year. Then I couldn’t easily answer whether I had more thoughts.

“The last year was the first year I’ve experienced in my life. I don’t know how to explain it. When I see this feeling… After passing, I think a year has passed in an instant.”
