Trump Ally Charlie Kirk Shot on University Campus, Sparks Renewed Gun Control Debate
OREM, Utah – Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist and staunch supporter of former President Donald trump, was shot on teh campus of Utah Valley University (UVU) on Thursday afternoon. The shooting occurred around 12:10 p.m. local time, reportedly originating from a nearby building, and Kirk was immediately transported to a hospital where he later died.
Authorities have taken a suspect into custody and are currently conducting an interrogation. The incident took place during the first stop of a planned 14-campus tour aimed at engaging with students. Eyewitness accounts suggest the shooting occurred while Kirk was addressing the topic of school shootings.
Kirk, 31, is the founder of Turning Point USA, a youth activist organization focused on conservative principles. He gained prominence as an early and vocal supporter of Trump, beginning in 2016, and hosts the popular “Charlie Kirk Show” podcast, boasting a substantial following across social media platforms.
The shooting prompted immediate reactions from political figures.Former President Trump described Kirk as “great and legendary,” stating, “nobody understood the youth in the United States better or had a better feeling for them than Charlie.” Trump ordered flags to be flown at half-mast and expressed his affection, stating, “Charlie, we love you!”
Expressions of sympathy also came from Vice President JD Vance, who called Kirk “a really good guy and young father,” and Defense Minister Pete Hegseth, who offered prayers for Kirk’s recovery.
The shooting drew condemnation from across the political spectrum. California Governor Gavin Newsom, representing the Democratic Party, labeled the attack “disgusting, hideous and reprehensible,” emphasizing the need to reject political violence. Former President Joe Biden echoed this sentiment, stating, “There is no place in our country for this kind of violence. She has to stop immediately,” and offered his prayers to Kirk’s family.
The incident has reignited the ongoing debate surrounding gun control in the United States.Fatal shootings are a recurring tragedy, especially on university campuses, and access to firearms, including pistols and high-caliber weapons, remains readily available. While severe attacks consistently prompt calls for stricter gun laws, concrete legislative progress has been repeatedly stalled due to resistance from Republicans and the powerful influence of the arms lobby, which has actively blocked reform efforts for years.
