Charles Michel has to cancel marriage in France

The corona virus is thwarting the wedding plans of Charles Michel, President of the European Council. The Belgian former prime minister was to tie the knot with his girlfriend Amélie Derbaudrenghien in the south of France on Saturday, but he has to cancel the wedding because the area has become an orange zone.

Michel was to marry on August 22 in the village of Montmeyan near the Gorges du Verdon. The French president Emmanuel Macron, among others, was invited. However, according to the French satirical magazine Le Canard enchaîné, Michel had to make the difficult decision to postpone the party.

The Belgian authorities label the Var department as an orange zone. Travelers returning from such an area are strongly recommended to undergo a corona test and observe fourteen days of quarantine. The latter recommendation in particular poses a problem for the European Council President, who would then be limited in the performance of his duties for fourteen days.

A delay does not have to be a cancellation. According to Sudinfo.be, a new date has already been set.
