Florida to Permanently End Daylight Saving Time in 2025
MIAMI, FL – Florida residents will permanently remain on Daylight Saving Time beginning November 2, 2025, effectively ending the twice-yearly clock changes. The move, authorized by a 2022 state law and awaiting federal approval, aims to provide more daylight during evening hours year-round. this change impacts all of Florida’s 22 million residents and aligns the state with a growing national trend toward permanent Daylight Saving Time.
The decision to adopt permanent Daylight Saving Time stems from a desire to improve public health, safety, and economic benefits. Supporters argue that consistent daylight hours in the evening reduce traffic accidents, lower energy consumption, and boost tourism and recreation. While the state law was passed in March 2022, implementation requires a Congressional action allowing Florida to opt out of federal regulations governing time zones. Currently, most of the United States observes Daylight Saving Time from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November.
Noah Yactayo, an off-road journalist and SEO specialist with El Comercio, notes the potential impact on daily routines. “the permanent shift means Floridians will no longer ‘fall back’ in November, and sunrise will occur later during the winter months,” Yactayo explained. “Though, the extended daylight in the evenings is expected to outweigh these adjustments for many.”
The change will mean sunrise will occur around 8:00 AM during the winter months in many parts of Florida, while sunset will be closer to 6:00 PM. The legislation was championed by state lawmakers who cited studies suggesting a correlation between permanent Daylight Saving Time and reduced crime rates.
As of September 30, 2024, federal legislation to make Daylight Saving Time permanent nationwide has stalled in Congress, leaving Florida’s implementation dependent on a specific exemption. State officials are continuing to work with federal representatives to secure the necessary approval before the November 2025 deadline. Residents are advised to prepare for the change by adjusting schedules and routines accordingly.
