The youngest son Konrad Adenauer, Georg Adenauer, is dead. He died on the weekend at the age of 88. He was the last child still alive of the first German Chancellor.
Georg Adenauer, the youngest son of the first German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, died at the age of 88. Georg Adenauer was born in 1931 when his father was still Lord Mayor of Cologne was. Two years later, the center politician and staunch Republican was driven out by the Nazis. So it happened that Georg Adenauer grew up in Rhöndorf in the Siebengebirge, where the family retired. In 1948 his mother Gussie, Adenauer’s second wife, died. She succumbed to the late effects of an attempted suicide in 1944 – out of despair that the Gestapo had betrayed her husband’s hiding place under great pressure.
Later Georg Adenauer lived with his Swedish wife Ulla and three sons Sven-Georg, Andreas and Hans in the immediate vicinity of the father in Rhöndorf. He was active in local politics. When the lawyer became a notary in Schleiden in 1969, the Eifel became his new home, reported the managing director of the Adenauer House, Corinna Franz. The former chancellor’s former home is now a museum.
